Getting clear on the whole story

I was checking out BlogCritics today and found this post about Charles Whitman[wiki]. He’s a guy that I had always known about, but never knew who he was. You know what I mean? There are things you know that happened in history, but you never know the whole story.

Here in Austin this was a big day in the media, though not one recognized nationwide. Forty years ago today a troubled ex-Marine named Charles Whitman climbed the clock tower of the University of Texas administration building and began to gun down students and passersby on the south and west malls of the University and on nearby Guadalupe Street.

Before heading to the University Whitman had killed his mother and his wife in their home, leaving behind a detailed suicide note with instructions to give his estate to psychological research and do an autopsy to determine if there was something physically wrong with his brain. As it turned out there was a tumor in his hypothalamus which may have been pressing on his amygdala and altering his emotional state.

He was able to get a footlocker and a small wooden crate full of guns into the building and to the top of the 27-story tower, including a Remington 700 rifle with a hunting scope, an M1 Carbine, another rifle, a shotgun and a variety of small arms. He started firing at 11:48 and ultimately killed 16 people and wounded another 31. [blogcritics]

Weird part is that I’ve been to Austin for SXSW and seen that tower. I never knew that’s where this event took place. You see this story copied into TV shows and movies all the time. It’s a morbid thought, but now I’ve got the facts a little more straight.

Say it with authority

It’s official now. Google is in the dictionary, and it’s a verb.

The next time one of your fancy-talkin’ friends tries to correct you for using Google as a verb–as in “Let’s google for pics of Scarlett Johansson”–point out that the hoity-toity Oxford English Dictionary now backs you up.

According to a Motley Fool news story the dictionary added the word during its latest round of updates. Over at the SearchEngineWatch they posted the dictionary’s definition of the word:

intr. To use the Google search engine to find information on the Internet. trans. To search for information about (a person or thing) using the Google search engine. [techweb]

Does this also mean that it’s fair game in Scrabble as well?

More sports in the middle of corn fields

All Iowa Lawn Tennis Club

In case the Field of Dreams wasn’t enough, you can now play a game of tennis on a natural turf court on a corn and soybean farm in northern, rural Iowa.

“I had a friend who died suddenly at 50, and I thought about this thing I’d wanted all my life,” he said. “If I was going to pursue this dream, I needed to go ahead and do it.”

The first time he looked at the level, rectangular lot on the family farm 3miles outside Charles City and envisioned a grass court, he was 11 and a budding player.

“One of my chores was feeding and watering the cattle,” he said. “I’d look at this area and say, ‘That would be a nice tennis court.’ My dad didn’t think a lot of that idea.” [desmoinesregister]

Field of Dreams - July 2005 - Me on the mound, Dad's playing thirdThe main thing to remember is that this is a real life project. The Field of Dreams was created for the movie and is now milked for all its tourism worth. I spent the day up there almost a year ago today for some 4th of July festivities with my family. It’s a good time, and the corn would be at a good height right now to get the total effect.

Been seeing a lot of Iowa around Vancouver lately

Slurpees at 7-11Did you know that American Gothic[wiki] is one of the most replicated paintings in pop culture, if not ever? You’ve more than likely seen the painting before. The dude on the farm with the pitchfork and his wife. Yeah, it’s that one. The wife looks less than impressed, and the guy seems a bit perturbed.

Grant Wood[wiki] is the man behind the painting. So often, these two facts escape the memory banks, but people know the painting when they see it. Well, at least those that stand to be familiar with American art, but it’s popularity world wide is constantly amazing.

I was born and raised in Grant Wood country. In grade school, we would spend weeks learning and celebrating who he was. There still is the Grant Wood Art Festival that goes on every year in Stone City, Iowa, which happens to be the the town that Grant Wood named my most favorite painting of his after. In fact, the 34th annual event just passed this month. It’s nothing huge, but the festival is worth the summer day and hospitality.

Now that I’m in Vancouver, my eyes catch these “signs of Iowa” more. When I walked into 7-11 the other day, it struck me to see this image above the slurpee spouts. Yet another parody of this less than a hundred year old artwork, and this time it’s to aid in the attraction of flavored, crushed ice drinks. For me, this completely envokes the summer time vibe to buy into the effect that it’s intending, not that I really need the added help.

Stone City - Grant WoodCombine this with the passing of some dude that I freaked out just the other day who was wearing the Tigerhawk[wiki] on his baseball cap. We were on the way to the NHL draft at GM Place when we passed him in the crosswalk on Burrard Street. I gave him a “Go Hawks!” with a fist pump, the universal thing that any good Iowan would do when we spot our own. He was caught off guard and just kind of looked back at me as we walked on. I’ve lived here for nearly eight months, waiting for that moment to come.

Anyhow, I have to say, Grant Wood truly is one of my more favorite artists, even though many critics of his time, and even today, don’t regard his works with much enthusiasm. I can’t say much more artsy fartsy things about him than that. I like his work, and his works help reflect the beauty of where I grew up.

Hello, nurse

All of the sudden, Stephen Hawking[wiki] has been all over the news with not just theories about physics, but also the future of humanity. It has a lot of people talking, and rightfully so.

Hawking is not talking through his hat when he says the survival of the human race depends on its ability to find new homes elsewhere in the universe, because there’s an increasing risk that humanity could be wiped out by a disaster. [indiatimes]

Stephen HawkingWhat I’m trying to sort out is his appearance at the String Theory conference in China[xinhuanet]. In a packed house of scientists, aka uber-geeks, was anyone paying attention when Hawking’s nurse was on stage?

I had a professor in college that told me numerous times that it pays to be a nerd some times. Of course, that professor was a female who preferred the comfort of fellow females, so I’m thinking this isn’t what she meant. However, I do beg to differ.

I’m thinking of a word right now, but it’s not kitty

World Cup Winners - rathergood.comI’m getting more and more excited for the World Cup[wiki]. I know next to nothing about anyone in the sport other than the fact that David Beckham[wiki] is married to Posh Spice. I also know that in America, we call it soccer, even though the sport has been around longer than American football.

This short from rathergood.com gets you even more in the mood, regardless of who you are pulling for. As to who I’m going for, I can’t really say. Like I said, I know very little. I do hear that the U.S. is an underdog favorite. There’s also that part of me that likes Mexico, and Brazil is always worth checking out.

Living in such an international city as Vancouver, it’ll be tough not paying attention to the festivities. I hear Commercial Drive is the place to be. I’ll have to check it out, maybe even bring some recording gear along with me.

How To Pirate a Vinyl Record

The Reverend sent me this link yesterday about how one goes about pirating a vinyl record. The whole process takes some skill to set up and materials that can probably found at your local mega-hardware center. And naturally it’s not a perfect replica that you are left with when the process is said and done, but I think this goes to show that you can pirate nearly anything if you really wanted to.

I’m not too sure that you’d want to do this to just any record though. Dumping a bunch of silcone that you didn’t mix properly might spell the end to your original, not re-released, Frank Zappa[wiki] albums.

The First Fan Into the Hockey Hall of Fame

I know that I am far from being qualified for this, but the contest is on for the first fan honored in the Hockey Hall of Fame. This is the first time that the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto has ever put a fan into the ranks of hockey legends, but it seems that this could be a one time thing depending on the outcome of this inaugural contest.

Check out part of the description for Brigette Mcilmoyle, a Canucks fan who has made the list of finalists.

I paid the ultimate tribute to all our Canadian hockey teams with my hockey themed wedding, complete with the wedding party each in a Canadian team jersey (including the bride) and a pastor in a ref’s jersey. An exact replica of the Cup as our cake headlined the decorations, and I walked down the isle to [the theme from Saturday night’s national hockey telecast] (to name a few of the highlights). Make no mistake, I was more excited about the theme than my husband. Girls CAN be even bigger hockey fans than boys! [tsn.ca]

I totally voted for her, but at 8% of the vote, as of today, her chances look slim.
