You can get the full story on Rebecca’s site, but we made our way to downtown New Westminster a few weekends ago to explore the area. And quite honestly, I was really impressed by a place I thought I somewhat already knew.
Whatever you think you’ve known about the area of the New West core, it’s probably changed over the past few years.
There’s the old charm still in the area. A river town that reminds me of the various cities and communities that line the Mississippi River that I passed through while growing up in the Midwest. At one point, living in places like this were major hubs as the populations flooded the area.

Keith MacKenzie recently wrote on The Tyee that New West could be the “Brooklyn” that Vancouver has been looking for, and before you draw a conclusion on that thought, look through all of my photos here and then read his whole article. It’s a thought that ran through my head before Rebecca even told me about his piece.

And when you’re adventuring, you do get hungry.

Stopping for a drink isn’t a bad idea either.
And the newly redone River Market is very impressive. It seemed somewhat quiet now but the secret is slowly getting out that it’s there. Just a matter of blocks from the New Westminster Skytrain Station, it’s a quick spot to pop out to for a visit.

And after all of that, the one thought that kept going through my mind was, and what often goes through many minds of locals who enjoy movies, this was also the area where parts of Rumble in the Bronx was filmed. Yes, Jackie Chan doing his crazy stunts on sets that were supposed to be around New York City, but with mountains in the background.
New Westminster is at a very interesting point in its still young history. Once capital of the province, the city has a feeling that something is coming, rather than what once was.
