There is a high probability that what’s contained in this post will be conceived as another old media versus new media argument over who’s better than who or which one will die out first. That’s not my intention, even if does point out a newspaper’s website presence.

Basically, it boils down to this; I want information on what’s going on in the small town of where I grew up in Iowa. My only option? The local newspaper that has been operating their print publication since 1879.

What’s the point of online presence if you don’t do it well?

The newspaper in question does have a website, but it’s highly outdated in terms of how it is constructed and updated. In fact, the basic foundation is something I helped to create in the mid-90′s when my parents owned and operated a website business during that time, giving me my first, professional gigs that have transformed into the sixty4media projects of today.

Nearly a year ago, I contacted the newspaper in hopes that I might be able to urge them to move beyond their current methods. My email follows with minor edits to protect the identity of the publication because my intent is not to slander them as much as I hope to promote positive change.

As a former member of your little league team for three years back in the 90′s and now living in Vancouver, B.C.(Canada), far from my home town where I grew up, it pains me that the only way I can get news about [my hometown] is through your website.

Simply put, your website is seriously outdated and missing functionality that would boost your online presence. There is a extreme lack of photography on your site, which is much easier to have published online than it is in print, not to mention cheaper. Additionally, you have no RSS feeds to subscribe to, making the distribution of your information easier to reach interested audiences such as myself.

Instead, I have to visit a site that is difficult to navigate while it is designed with highly outdated methods of programming. On top of that, I have to remember that it’s update[d] once a week, which is not always at the top of my list of priorities. Even then, there is not enough content on your site to make it worth the time. Especially during problems with high river levels and flooding, there is very little in getting information from your website.

Even though I don’t live in [my hometown] anymore, I still hope and wish for a day when you have a website that is much better at letting me know about my hometown.

What follows next is the response that I received from one of their co-publishers, only edited to protect the newspaper’s identity.

John, you are absolutely correct about the lack of content. First and foremost, we are a newspaper. If former residents need to keep up on the news they need to subscribe to [the newspaper]. We depend on subscription sales, not on a FREE website to pay my bills. I know, I know, newspapers will be an outdated form of news dispensing in a few years. Just what I was told ten years ago yet our subscription sales are better then they were just five years ago. If we put everything on our website that is in our outstanding newspaper, who is going to subscribe? Who is going to support my advertisers? I don’t know of anyone looking online for grocery ads. And both grocery stores in town are my biggest advertisers. The website we have does need work but we really are not that concerned with it at this time. It is there JUST so we have a presence. We can send the paper to Canada and would welcome you as a subscriber. Yes, it may take a few days to get there but it is a weeks worth of news. I guess I could charge everyone to read content on the website and put more on it but that would take hiring another employee and economics tell me that I would probably lose money on just such a venture. So for now our focus will stay in print. That is where we stated in 1879 and it seems to be working for us. Thank you for the feedback, [the newspaper's co-publisher]

In all honesty, I didn’t know what to expect when I sent my original email, but the response I received was beyond disappointing. I had hoped that perhaps my inquiry might spark a conversation over what could be done better, how that might happen, and potentially nominate myself to aid in that process.

I was so let down by this response that I wrote back to say that I can’t support their newspaper anymore. I’m not interested in giving any monetary support to an organization that looks, behaves, and has a mindset like so, and it’s purely a personal opinion. I know I should help support my hometown and not be down on my roots, but loyalty can only go so far.

And truth be told, this initial email exchange actually took place in June of 2008. I’ve often thought about making this post since then, but the hope was that up to now, the site would have improved to some extent.

It hasn’t. Their “JUST so we have a presence” of a website is still the same.

As a newsprint publication, I find this very depressing. I’m not asking that everything they publish in their newspaper be put online. The point is to take the content they currently publish online to a more accessible and web friendly level.

Giving away the big idea

So, here’s my idea so that it’s in the public domain and there for the taking, just in case anyone, be it consumer or publisher, finds themselves in a similar situation.

WordPress. I know, big surprise, right? But look what you get out of the box: clean URL’s, SEO, easy media uploading, easy content publication, archived content, and search-ability. Being that WordPress is free, the only investment would come from the template implemented on the site.

And your advertisers? Why not include that in the package that you already sell to your sponsors in your print publications? Sure, the local grocery store might print their weekly specials in ink, but why not give them a generic, graphic ad for their business on the website? It doesn’t have to be timely as much as helping sell your presence as an official news source of the community. You might even attract out of town advertisers and expand your client base. Depending on how you want to shape the business model, anything is really possible.

I’ve already built a site that is putting these mechanics to work using WordPress.

When we were in a pinch at my day job, management looked to me to help build a better website for one of the radio stations, The Beat 94.5, here in Vancouver. The prior site was built on old infrastructure that had become so outdated that hardly anyone could work with it. Knowing my abilities to do such projects, I was given a design and built the site on WordPress in about two weeks.

The promotions staff add content based on categories, custom fields, and the Post Expirator plugin. Ads are populated using the Ad-minister plugin, and I handle any theme and code tweaks as they present themselves. The system works fairly well and is meant to be temporary until the original, envisioned version of the site can be built and implemented at some point in the future. As well as this works for the site right now, the urgency for that changeover has lessened.

Anyone could do this

The basics of this WordPress framework on a radio station website is about a stones throw from what a newspaper would need or want. It’s not a simple copy and paste, but it’s do-able and more effective when you get an infrastructure in place that nearly everyone in your organization can interact with. Why would you limit it to just one person with server access and an ancient version of a website editor?

Being that this isn’t too hard for anyone with some intermediate web design skills to implement, big and small newspapers should take more focus on this concept. Citizen journalists and bloggers are often scoffed at in these discussions, but I think I’ve already proved how this could be implemented into the professional realm.

If someone like myself were to team up with a bunch of trained journalists and photographers, and then littered the site with Google ads and other legitimate advertisers while publishing quality content, my presence in your town might start hurting your presence down the street. Not offering something that fulfills what your audience wants can be a huge negative effect, even if you have been around for over a hundred years.

So what?

Presence is key, and it’s better to have some rather than none. At a certain point, you should consider the quality of the message that your presence presents and how that reflects upon your business, organization, or group. As a self-proclaimed news source, even if it is the only one by luxury of default, this shouldn’t be ignored.

And in this case, I was a potential customer of someone’s presence and was told that I wasn’t right. To me, this is near business suicide, and so I choose to not be a consumer of my hometown’s publication at all.

I’ve reworked the design to my website to challenge my limits in terms of web design. It’s taken me about a month or so to get the overall concept down, but it was time to do something different in order to push my boundaries with what I know and am comfortable with. The various sixty4media projects that we’ve been working on has made me think about this a lot, and a recent project for my day job saw me take the website for one of the radio stations I work for, The Beat 94.5, to a temporary overhaul into a complete WordPress site.

The basic inspiration for this design was a hot afternoon while drinking a Vitamin Water, something that I’ve become a fan of over the past year. Looking at their label, I found myself admiring the simplicity of the design to market their product. When it comes down to it, it’s just text and colors. No fancy graphic logo or mascots. Text was the only thing selling their product, so I found some inspiration in that.

For the most part, this effort was one of design over function. I’ve asked for opinions of some folks that I really respect and taken their feedback, which should never be overlooked. I tried to incorporate how other people felt when they saw it but then tried to one up the recommendation in order to push the personal challenge ever more.

If you find problems with the site, be sure to let me know. Any good web designer will tell you that any project, especially something to do with your own site, is constantly in development. You’re truly never satisfied.

We’re home from San Francisco, and it felt great to get back to the PNW. When you’re traveling like that and staying in a hotel room for a few days, it’s your own bed that you start to miss.

That’s not to say that we were all ready to leave San Francisco. That was my first time being there, and we saw quite a bit for only being there for not that long. This happens when you take an impromptu walk for about five hours. Combine that with getting around for all the WordCampSF events, the trip kinda wiped us out in the very end.

WordCampSF 2009 has come and gone, and the day was everything you could really want from an event that is put on by the group of people who have the day to day job of making WordPress be everything that it is. The day stayed fairly well on schedule, the food was excellent, there was an abundance of water (which is always a huge thing for me personally when it comes to any event or conference), the location was a perfect fit, the wireless was blazing fast, and there was plenty of places to plug into when your battery was running low (aside from the minor issue of a circuit breaker tripping in the downstairs room a handful of times during an afternoon session). I’m really not one to complain about many things, but there isn’t very much that I can complain about when I try to think about it.

There were a lot of great people that I ran into today as well. It was great to see Lloyd and Lorelle again, and I even met a developer who came all the way from Orlando to be at this WordCamp. When you have the chance to be around a group of people like this, especially in a city like San Francisco, you’ll make that long journey to spend a weekend talking about all things WordPress.

Steve Souders had a really good session about how to make your themes faster when it comes to page load times, and Scott Porad gave an interesting session on what goes on in the empire that is known as Pet Holdings, Inc., home to I Can Haz Cheezeburger and many other hilarious sites.

My time at the Genius Bar was relatively slow, but I did get asked at least one question as how one gets a basic, entry level to HTML because the person felt that might help them as a user with WordPress. That was a really tough question to answer, and I could only think to direct him to the WordPress Codex. I’ve been doing this stuff since I was about 14, and a lot of that was trial and error combined with simple reverse engineering. It’s not so much about having trouble with teaching what comes naturally as much as it’s tough to teach what took years to just make sense, so I hope I helped that person out a little bit.

In all honesty, I spent a large part of this afternoon reading through some of my RSS feeds on Google Reader that have been piling up over the months. I’m still not used to having a laptop that actually allows me to function on a very efficient level. My old PowerBook G4 was very sluggish, and this weekend has been one of discovery in terms of what I can actually do with this beautiful MacBook Pro. I spent my time at the Genius Bar doing some padding of my own genius by plowing through the various WordPress related feeds that I’m subscribed to and bookmarking things of interest into my Delicious bookmarks. If you want to get an idea of what I’m finding interesting, that’s a good place to check into.

Tonight is the post-WordCamp party at the Automattic headquarters on the San Francisco waterfront, just near AT&T Ballpark. It will be another chance to talk to people and get to know this community of developers and users more, and that’s what is really important when it comes to these types of gatherings. These are the people who are making the world get better and better when it comes to the Internet.

We also know how to have fun. As Matt Mullenweg said in his session today, “If you make a feature request at the party tonight, you have to do a shot.“

Hot on the heels of today’s WordCampSF 2009, a recent survey on Twitter by Matt Mullenweg showed that two of BraveNewCode’s plugins for WordPress took number three and one.

WordTwit is something I’ve been using for some time now, and it’s a must have add-on that automatically posts updates to Twitter when you publish a post. Version 2.0 has brought on some great improvements that keep the plugin simple yet very powerful.

Taking number one is WPtouch, a plugin that makes your WordPress site optimized for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and Android mobile devices. It’s been available for some time now, and I’ve been very slow to getting it installed onto my site. Call it being lazy because it’s a very quick and easy process to upload it to your WordPress installation, activate it, and you’re done.

Dale and Duane are consistently working on improvements to the WPtouch infrastructure, making it better and better with each release. Keep your eyes on their blog to get the latest news on what’s next.

After a GPS and Google Maps adventure of helping our taxi driver get to the Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco, it’s been a jam packed morning at WordCampSF 2009. And actually, it’s been very relaxed and chilled in terms of the sessions so far today.

Andy Peatling gave a great session on BuddyPress, Matt Cutts from Google had a variety of great insights when it comes to SEO and your WordPress site, and the “State of the Word” by none other than Matt Mullenweg himself was great. I learned a lot about the history of this CMS, and the future looks really promising for WordPress on multiple fronts. It’s one of those days that makes you excited to be a developer and gets those ideas cranked up in your head.

There have been a variety of great announcements that are going around the circles, and I can’t even recall them all. It’ll take a little while for me to digest them all and give my insights to later, but a lot of what I’ve seen today make our projects with sixty4media clients look even more exciting when it comes to current and future endeavors.

Needless to say, there is a lot more to check out today. The afternoon sessions are getting ready to kick off, and I have my time at the Genius Bar at 4:55PM to 5:45PM. If the morning has been any preview, the rest of the day should be pretty kick ass.

I’m in San Francisco this weekend for WordCampSF, the WordPress conference that is organized by the creators of this platform that we use pretty much exclusively with our sixty4media projects. This will be a chance to meet new people and find out new things that I can use in my bag of tricks for future development with my WordPress endeavors. There is also the opportunity to share some of the ideas and concepts I use with others in order to give back to the community.

I’ve been asked to spend some time at the Genius Bar in the afternoon where people will be able to come up and ask WordPress related questions. I’m thrilled to be asked to do this, but my only hope is that I can live up to that “genius” tag as much as possible.

Rebecca is along for the trip as well as our pal Duane. John Biehler is in route today, and Dale Mugford will join us later today to bring the BraveNewCode crew in full attendance.

With hope, I’ll do my best to get some good photos and writing in this trip because of the recent upgrade of a MacBook Pro to our sixty4media arsenal. During the recording of episode #70 of The Crazy Canucks, I made a quick screenshot of what I see on my end of the conversation to sort of share what it takes to put our podcast together.

What you see are three basic components: Mac OS X 10.5, Ubercaster, and Skype. Conference calling from computer to computer, recording local mics and remote mics on two separate tracks, and I like to keep the sound preferences open in the event that I need to check on something or make any changes.

What you are missing is the only other application in the overall process of editing, Levelator. Then we make the post on the site using WordPress, the RSS feed gets updated, and the podcast episode ends up in your ears, depending on how you listen to it.

I know I’ve posted about this before, but at this point in the overall history of TCC, the process of knowing what it takes to whip together an episode is getting easier to setup, record, edit, and publish. It never ceases to amaze me as to how much fun it is to talk hockey with this crew.

Duane, Rebecca, and I have really tried hard to get this idea off the ground, and there is still much left to do before the date comes. Keep tabs on the WCWhistler website and subscribe to the RSS feed for all the latest news.

I designed a WordPress site for my friend Andy at No Boundaries.org some months ago, and the final version that we settled on really pushed my personal boundaries of knowledge in terms of PHP and CSS to get some of the things to work that he was wishing for. Never wanting to let a good friend down, I got something to work that came up tonight at WordCamp Fraser Valley.

I’m not sure what the original question was, but my design for No Boundaries had custom drop down menus added to the header so that Andy could easily add and remove pages from where ever he was in the world and have them show up in those menus.

And to be honest, I can’t really tell you how I got it all to work because it was that long ago. However, Stu Nicholls made a great blog post about how to do this with simple CSS. I used this post to hack together my concept for Andy’s site, and the final design turned out to be what he wanted.

Now doing a quick Google search to find this resource again, I came across this WordPress plugin, WordPress CSS Drop-down Menu, that could do this for you without getting into all the code. I have no experience using it, but the author makes reference to the same blog post that I just did, so it might be worth checking out first before you get into the code.

You could say that this style of WordCamp is a bit out of the ordinary. In fact, I’m not sure that many WordCamps are held in casinos, but this event is pretty nice in the fact that there is an amazing space out here for gatherings, meetups, and conventions like this.

WordCamp Fraser Valley is a growing push to move web related camps like this out of the downtown core and into the mysterious world away from the ocean waters. Wifi, reasonable sources of power, plenty of water, a huge room, podium, PA system, projector, and a screen. What more could you really need for a WordCamp?

Well, it might be better if something like this was a bit longer, but an all day event at a location like this might be tough. If you head down the escalators, you might be enticed by the various ways to gamble your money away, so you’re probably better off sticking to your laptop like myself and get some content out while checking out your RSS feeds.

The list of presenters tonight are a good group of folks. Raul kicked off this WordCamp with a session on switching from Blogger to WordPress, and it was a great way to introduce newbies with a way of letting go of your worries and do more with blogging in general. Even if you don’t have a blog or are just beginning with your blog, these concepts are worth considering.

Gary from BlurFur, the folks who have headed up this event, made a last minute presentation on business blogging after another speaker was unable to attend. A topic that is largely ignored, and often not even thought about, businesses should be doing more blogging. Period. If you want a way to reach your customers directly, then this is it. Promote your product, talk about your industry, or publish your your press releases on your blog, there are many avenues you can take when it comes to adding a blog to your business.

More topics are being presented tonight, so I will let Rebecca’s live blog speak more to what’s going on, not to mention that she is also one of the presenters tonight. She will be speaking about adding custom sidebars to your posts and pages, something we are big fans of doing. Kulpreet is currently speaking about security to WordPress, and John Chow will bring his evil, money making ways with blogging to the room.

I have to say that I am really impressed with tonight’s turnout. It’s always great to see people from various aspects of blogging. And yes, there are people that don’t even have a blog and are here to find out more. If that’s someone like yourself, then check out a WordCamp sometime. The WordPress community not only does geek stuff and talk about code, but we also like to share the things we know.

There is a good chance that RSS subscribers just got blasted with a back log of posts, so please don’t think that I made about ten posts in a single day. I did some rearranging a couple of months ago when I re-themed my site, restructured my WordPress install, and upgraded to the latest and greatest version of 2.5.

I neglected to make adjustments to FeedBurner, and that has been fixed. Let that be a mental note to the rest of you with similar setups. If you make significant, back end changes to your WordPress site, don’t forget to double check you RSS feed if you are using a third party site like FeedBurner.

I got an email from someone who subscribes to my RSS[wiki] feed that noticed something new in their subscription lately, and you might have as well.

The image here is a snippet of how a post of mine looks in Google Reader. Basically, it’s a simple plugin that provides a copyright stamp at the beginning of every post that goes into your RSS feed. There are a few variations of how you can do this with WordPress, but the one I am using is FeedEntryHeader. It puts a copyright, a link to your site, and a link to the original post at the start of all your posts.

Why would you want to do this? Well the fact of the matter is that there are a lot of aggregator sites that like to take the content from your RSS feeds and put them up on their sites as original content. Better yet, there are some sites that will completely credit you for your content but strip away all the embedded links. This plugin at least puts all this information at the top where it’s slightly hard to miss. At the very least, the URL to your original content will show up on those sites that “borrow” your content.

If you use WordPress and care about the things you publish, you should look at using this plugin. It’s more than just getting credit for what you publish. There is also something to be said about other people making money off of the content you generate, and that’s just inconsiderate.
