The Bourdon and Cherepanov accidents are tragic, for their families and the NHL. The question is whether these accidents can be prevented in the future. Maybe better testing on the NHL's part for the Cherepanov situation and educating the players (youngsters) on dangerous activities such as motorcycle etc... Just seems like more should/can be done to prevent tragedies like these from occuring in the future.... My thoughts. http://jib-sports-culture.blogspot.com/2008/11/tragedy-for-promising-rookies.html

Being relatively new to Vancouver and Hockey in general I am excited for the season. In a pretty complete post you missed one player that stands up and grinds every game - Burrows.

He may not rack up the points every game but he does play his heart out.

@Darren - Like I said, I don't care at this point, but the winds are saying that Gillis might have some other, potential "big trades" on the table regardless. And with the saga of Gaorik in Minnesota, they might be willing to part with him, but I have no clue who we would send their way.

@GZ Expat - I would love to see Luongo get it, but apparently there is a rule saying goalies can't wear the C. I could be wrong.

Also, watch for good some from The Crazy Canucks very soon! :)

Agreed...the excitement isn't there. When I look at the lineup and then I think of the coach I sort of go...uhhh...New Jersey-west? Maybe they will be 'grittier' and they will win some games...but thinking that they will be even more boring than last year sort of makes my skin crawl.

Sundin...Biggest waste of time this summer. There is $10m that could have been used on a couple of decent players...instead, it sits in the bank while we await his decision. C'mon Mike...pull it off the table and tell Sundin to get on his bike...let's find someone else.

What about Luongo as Captain? I know its not customary to have a goalie with the C...but isn't this his team? Barring that...Willie is the guy.

I miss the Crazy Canucks...get back in the 'studio' and get us some content...especially for hockey starved people like me.

I just read that Sundin won't make a decision before the start of the season, so that will hopefully force Gillis's hand to get the team some more help, either by signing or trade.

That's a rather comprehensive post! I'm pretty intrigued to see what this season is going to look like. I think it could go either way. In all honesty, I haven't paid much attention to who has gone where and who has come our way, but I'm rather optimistic.

Re: Nonis - I think not making the playoffs was the nail in his coffin.

You also left out Cooke - another player that grew up with a lot of us fans here in Vancouver in the late 90s. I think the hesitation this season, for me, stems from not really knowing who half the team is now. Who is number what. Who will be out on Raise a Reader Day for me to take photos with? I dunnnooo.

That is one robust summary. I'm optimistic that Gillis will not end up signing Sundin, either because the aging Swede signs somewhere else or retires. $10 million is stupid money, and feels like Mark Messier all over again.
