It’s the ‘boy cries wolf’ syndrome. Someday, someone is going to actually try and rob that car…and no one will pay attention to the alarm because it always goes off.

The kind of alarm I want is when you touch the door handle, you get about 10,000 volts shooting through your body. That’d deter some people from touching my car.

Vancouver has a noise-pollution bylaw – you can be fined etc if your alarm goes off for more than a couple minutes.

Oddly enough, when I was waiting at the bus this morning a tow truck was hauling away a car that had an alarm going off. It was just a VW with the constant “beep beep” not like the one near our place (which you describe) with an entire plethora of annoying sounds.
